Fencing competitions in Southern California could not exist without a local cadre of highly skilled referees, and the Division could always use more. If you are interested in becoming an official USA Fencing referee, just follow these six steps:

1. Join USA Fencing (any membership type other than “Access” will do). If you are over 18 you will also need to purchase the +CheckEd add-on, take the 90-minute, online SafeSport course and apply for a background check.

2. Read the Rulebook, especially the Penalty Chart.

3. Attend a referee seminar (online or in-person). You can find a list of upcoming seminars, here.

4. Study the Study Guide.

5. Take the online exam. You will need to score at least 90% to pass.

6. Contact your referee seminar instructor to schedule a practical exam. This will take place at a local tournament and you will be paid. Upon successful completion you will receive your rating.

And that’s it! You are now an official USA Fencing referee. Contact the Division to let us know your hiring availability and we will reach out to you when refereeing opportunities become available.

Referees are paid an honorarium based on their rating, plus extra for meals, travel expenses and overtime. SoCal’s fee schedule can be found, here.

More information on becoming a ref can be found on the USA Fencing website.

If you have any questions about becoming a referee or would like to be placed on our hiring roster please contact our Head of Referee Development.

Referee Seminars
